Twice as Good Productions was delighted to hear that it had received such positive support in the way of funding from the NZ Creative Communities Scheme to assist with bringing Outdoor Shakespeare In The Bay’s production of As You Like It to Te Puna Quarry in January 2016. Feedback from our inaugural production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in February 2015 was extremely encouraging and we wanted to bring an experience of even higher quality to our audiences in 2016. Funding enabled us to vastly improve our sound system so that our inexperienced actors new to outdoor theatre and our audience didn’t have to battle against the challenges of voices being lost in the vast outdoor space and having to contend with wind and other elements of nature - the cicadas in particular created quite a chorus at twilight each evening!
Bringing outdoor Shakespeare to Te Puna Quarry was very much a community project that involved students from Mount Maunganui College, Te Wharekura o Mauao, Kati Kati College and Bethlehem College and provided a platform for young actors and musicians and backstage crew to hone their skills. It also brought together more experienced theatre practitioners who were able to share their knowledge and training with the younger members of the ensemble. A number of wonderful volunteers in the community were needed to bring it all together as staging a production outdoors brings with it considerable challenges - putting up sound, lighting and set each night and having to put it all away again at the end of the evening is an arduous task and we were grateful for the help of the Lions Club and Te Puna Tai Kwondo Club as well as for their assistance with parking management. The volunteers from the Te Puna Quarry Summer Trust ensured that no one went thirsty or hungry and audiences went home each evening having enjoyed a very special experience in a stunningly beautiful outdoor setting.
We were proud too to be able to donate from the proceeds of one of our evenings $1520.00 to the NZ Heart Foundation as well as assisting one of our actors who was selected to be a part of the Young NZ Shakespeare Company in his fund raising efforts to get to London's Globe and the RSC in July by donating about $400 from sales at our lolly bar. Outdoor Shakespeare in the Bay is of the community and for the community. 😊
